First consignment of used batteries go for recycling

The battery recycling tube situated in Truro Post Office was emptied for the first time last week.

Although slow to take off, used battery recycling is now gaining momentum and Post Office staff report that people are expressing their support of the venture.

It is estimated that the tubes contain 10kg worth of batteries and from United Downs they will be sent to a recycling facility, where the chemicals such as lead, cadmium and mercury will be recovered.

Thus, resources are conserved and potentially toxic chemicals diverted from landfill.
