  1. interesting development

    EUROPEAN CENTRE FOR ENVIRONMENT & HUMAN HEALTH
    • The Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry (a partnership of the University of Exeter, University of Plymouth and the NHS in Devon and Cornwall), with the support of the European Union Convergence Programme in Cornwall, is investing up to £14 million (capital and revenue) to establish a new and innovative research centre – the European Centre for Environment and Human Health sited in Cornwall. The focus of research will be to explore the interconnections between the environment, human health and wellbeing. This includes both environmental threats, and opportunities to use the environment to promote health and wellbeing. Environmental Epidemiology and Toxicology (especially emerging environmental contaminants including nanomaterials) General areas envisaged include:
    • Climate, Oceans and Health (with a focus on threats to coastal communities)
    • Clinical Photobiology
    • Promotion of health and wellbeing using the natural environment
    • Environmental Psychology and Behaviour Change
    • Environment and Human Health Policy
    • Business, Environment and Human Health
    The development of the European Centre for Environment and Human Health builds on the wealth of environmental expertise in the South West and offers a unique opportunity to develop interdisciplinary collaborations with, for example:
    • The internationally respected Centre for Ecology and Conservation and the proposed Environment and Sustainability Institute based at the Cornwall Campus of the University of Exeter;
    • Ecotoxicology and Ecophysiology at University of Exeter;
    • The Eco-toxicology and Stress Biology Research Centre at University of Plymouth;
    • Other related areas, such as the Plymouth Marine Laboratory; the Eden Project; the Met Office; Natural England; the Environment Agency and the Living with Environmental Change (LWEC) programme.

  2. Planning for health care post peak oil

    Anyone with an interest in health and well-being, whether on a professional or personal level, is invited to contribute to this forum – we need as many ideas, inspirations and visions as possible. Modern health care is highly dependent upon fossil fuels, in particular oil, and it will be the most vulnerable who suffer if we don’t put plans in place. The modern health service has been described as ‘cure crazy’. We need far more health enhancing measures – indeed a new paradigm of healthcare which is inclusive, integrated with other issues such as food and housing and, above all, with decentralised decision making.

    • RE: Planning for health care post peak oil

      The only comment I feel I can make at the moment is that, when the wottsit hits the fan, there will be many therapists in the community available to provide a Parallel Health Service. I would imagine that Clinics would have to be established, peripatetic or in our individual homes or, as was done in 1900’s America by homeopaths, they would travel around in horse and cart – or biofuel-powered motorcycles and sidecars ! – to communities and treat clients in their own homes.
      Should the economy grind to a halt, we would ALL find ourselves very much in the same boat, and I would envisage the LETS bartering system coming fully into its own.
      At present, many practitioners are noticing somewhat of a downturn in business and will therefore be focussed in keeping the pennies coming in, which may explain the lack of response to this forum.
      Feedback, anyone?

        Indeed. Falmouth LETS is still running after 15 years, though it works like this rather than as barter (you don’t have to find a direct exchange)

        See Offers in Health & Personal section of http://falmouthlets.org.uk website. Trades can now be done direct online rather than using the old cheque system. You’d be most welcome to rejoin, Peter. We welcome (and need) new members!

        Also, a Truro LETS group will be starting soon (using same online trading software as Falmouth LETS) – do contact me via Falmouth LETS website (email or phone) if you’d like to know more. Probably worth your while joining both groups.

        All the best,

        Rob
