Info Two of the severest challenges facing humankind are Climate Change and ‘Peak Oil’. The former is well documented and very visible in the media. Peak Oil, however, remains under the radar for most people. Yet Peak Oil, heralding the era of ever declining fossil fuel availability, may well challenge the economic and social stability that is essential if we are to mitigate the threats posed by Climate Change.

In response to the twin pressures of Peak Oil and Climate Change, some pioneering communities in the UK, Ireland and beyond are taking an integrated and inclusive approach to reduce their carbon footprint and increase their ability to withstand the fundamental shifts in the way we live that will accompany Peak Oil.

Transition Truro is addressing these challenges, engaging local people in creatively developing low energy solutions to all aspects of our lives from food to transport, housing to leisure. These solutions must come from us who know our neighbourhoods and communities well.

It would be chaotic to be suddenly plunged into a world without oil . However, if we plan for that future knowledgeably and imaginatively we could enjoy a higher quality of life than we do now.

What would a low carbon society look like? How would it feed, house, clothe and power itself? Do we wait until it’s too late or do we lead by example?

The urgency to deal with the decline in cheap oil is matched only by the urgent need to reduce our carbon emissions to avoid the worst effects of climate change.

We are holding regular meetings to enable people to find out more about the issues and contribute knowledge and ideas. We are also forming local community groups to look at specific issues such as food, energy, housing, transport and health.

We hope as many people as possible will join us in making our city and surrounding area a low carbon, climate friendly community. A vibrant and happy place to live and work in.
